NSW vs SAC Match Prediction & Analysis

The Sheffield Shield is a tournament steeped in history and there will be plenty of cricket fans from across the globe who will once again be keeping an eye on this game as it signifies the start of the 123rd season!

Western Australia have won the Shield in each of the last three seasons and they will take some stopping once again this term. New South Wales, who have won it twice since the 2013/14 campaign will fancy their chances of ending that run but a first championship winning season for South Australia since 1995/96 would be a big shock.

At this stage of the competition, there is often more in the pitch for the bowlers to exploit and that will certainly be the case in the early stages of this game before warm weather comes in for the final two days.

TEAMS PREVIEW

New South Wales Preview

New South Wales could put out a brilliant XI of players who are unavailable for this game with the likes of Sean Abbott, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Ben Dwarshuis and of course Pat Cummins with Steve Smith topping the list!

However, they still have an excellent group of players to select from in this game and one of the greatest off-spinners Nathan Lyon will be leading the spin bowling attack.

With the bat, look out for Josh Philippe playing in a positive manner at the top of the order and he will be looking to outperform Alex Carey, his opposite number. Nic Maddinson provides the experience for New South Wales in the top three.

With the ball, Liam Hatcher and captain Moises Henriques are likely to take the opening overs.

New South Wales Predicted Playing XI:

Josh Philippe (wk), Ollie Davies, Matthew Gilkes, Nic Maddinson, Liam Hatcher, Moises Henriques (c), Ryan Hadley, Jack Edwards, Tanveer Sangha, Nathan Lyon, Jack Nisbet

South Australia Preview

Not for the first time, Travis Head will be a key player in a cricket match in 2024 and the left-handed top order batter not only comes into this match in supreme form but with a point to prove as he looks to secure a vacant spot at the top of Australia’s batting line up. Henry Hunt is likely to open the batting alongside Head with Daniel Drew and Alex Carey both capable of making big scores also.

With the ball, Nathan McAndrew will certainly enjoy bowling over the first two days of the match and it would be a surprise if off-spinner Ben Manenti did not come into the game on the final day if South Australia are in the field.

As ever, much will depend on Head and the captaincy of Nathan McSweeney in the field. If Head is able to score quickly then he will make McSweeney’s job in the field all the simpler!

South Australia Predicted Playing XI:

Travis Head, Nathan McSweeney (c), Jordan Buckingham, Alex Carey (wk), Brendan Doggett, Daniel Drew, Henry Hunt, Ben Manenti, Nathan McAndrew, Conor McInerney, Lloyd Pope, Liam Scott
